Carrell Farms is a grass based livestock operation located in Monroe, GA. They produce 100% grassfed, 100% chemical free Asian water buffalo on a year-round basis.

Under the name Buffalo Gal Grassfed Beauty they handcraft their grassfed water buffalo tallow into lip balms and skin care products.

*THANK YOU Heather, Virginia, and Pam for helping on Tuesday! You guys are a blessing! We couldn’t have a co-op without volunteers and we appreciate you all so much!

Farmer Updates

Marie of Bakery on Brooks is back this week! Be sure and check out her fabulous Gluten Free Goodies. I sure have missed her Bread and the Almond Sandies that, I willingly admit, I am addicted to!

Greg of Heritage Farm has several Lamb offerings and Duck on special this week! Bacon is back and it is delicious! The Deli Ham is Hickory Smoked and awesome!

Dabrielle of My Daily Bread has Yeast Rolls, Hot Pepper Cheese Log and Greek Pasta Salad (regular and Gluten Free) on special this week! Don’t miss these yummy deals! Dabrielle also added Pumpernickel this week! Hmmm — Deli Ham from Heritage Farm on Pumpernickel from My Daily Bread sounds like a winner to me!

2015 Market and Member Responsibilites

Since it is a ‘new year’, I thought I would start it out by clarifying information about the Market, our duties and your responsibilities as Market Members. We appreciate the opportunity to serve you through connecting you with our Local Farmers, Producers and Artisans and appreciate your support.

As Market Manager, it is my responsibility to ensure that the Farmers and Artisans that offer items on the Market provide products that are GMO-Free, Soy Free, Herbicide, Pesticide, Fungicide Free. In addition, all meats come from strictly grass-fed, hormone free animals. There are meat items that are NOT nitrate free due to government imposed regulations; however, those items are clearly identified in the descriptions. Our Bakers use Organic products in their goods. Egg producers use Soy Free as well as GMO Free feed and their chickens are pastured. Artisans use local products when available and all items are handmade by the Artisan. In short, I have spent numerous hours ensuring that we have the ‘best of the best’ in our Farmers and Artisans and in the products they offer.

The Market is not really a co-op and not really like a traditional Farmers Market. It is a service for the Farmers and Artisans to sell their products through an on-line ordering system, have one drop off location and receive one check from the Market. This is a convenience for them as well as the Members. (You write one check for your purchases rather than writing a check for each Farmer or Artisan.) The Market is rather like a ‘pass through point’. Legally, we cannot store any items that are not picked up during Market hours.

I am also responsible for the back-end processing of Market, settling accounts, writing checks, running reports, printing reports and getting those to the Market coordinators each Thursday. I also pickup the items that are ordered through My Daily Bread on my way into town and distribute those to the Market Coordinators.

For the most part, and only through the kindness of Kathy Barnes and Sarah Rockey most items are dropped at the Lawrenceville location. Kathy and Sarah then load the items in their cars and take them to your Market, unload and sort meat, produce, bakery goods, etc. for each Member. Their Market responsibilities start around noon on Market Day and they are very busy sorting, double checking orders, setting up Sales Tables so when Market opens you find your order and invoice checked and ready for you. Lauren Stephens coordinates the Lawrenceville Market and although she does not have to transport items, she still goes through the set-up process. We truly would not have Market if it were not for these wonderful, dedicated and selfless ladies.

Member Responsibilites

  • Place your order via the on-line ordering system between 9:00am Friday morning and 8:00pm Monday evening.
  • Read notices sent by Market Manager to ensure you are aware of changes.
  • Pickup at your Market location between the posted Market hours.
  • Double check tags on items for your name.
  • Contact the Market Coordinator if you have an emergency.

The system works when we use the system that is in place. Effective immediately:

  • Orders must be placed using the Market website. Ordering hours are 9:00am Friday – 8:00pm Monday.
  • Ordered items must be picked up during Market pickup times. Crossfit/Lawrenceville and Lilburn between 4:30pm and 6:30pm every Thursday. Hamilton Mill between 2:30pm and 4:30pm every Thursday.
  • If you have a bona-fide emergency, you must call your Market Coordinator before close of Market. All efforts will be made to accommodate your need; however, there will be a $10.00 fee assessed for late pickup to compensate the Market Coordinator for her time and inconvenience. This fee may be waived at the discretion of the Coordinator.
  • All items left at the end of Market will be distributed to Volunteers or donated to the Lilburn Co-op. It is your responsibility to pick up the items you ordered and your account will be charged. One missed pickup will result in the necessity of keeping a debit or credit card number at the Market.

… this and that …

I wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2015!

Thank you for your support of the Market.

Please know that we appreciate the support of All Saints Lutheran Church, Crossfit O-Zone Gym and the Hamilton Mill Community for the use of the great spaces for Market. We are grateful for you and for your support of our dedicated, LOCAL Farmers/Growers and Artisans.

Augusta Locally Grown:  THE ON-LINE MARKET IS OPEN AT AUGUSTA LOCALLY GROWN!N

HAPPY NEW YEAR AUGUSTA LOCALLY GROWN!

In planning for 2015, we hope you’ll commit to some of our upcoming volunteer opportunities. What a great and delicious way to make a difference in the community!

SAT, JAN 24 – 100 IN HARRISBURG RAISED BED PROJECT … Join us and volunteers from Trinity on the Hill UMC for a Day of Service on Saturday, January 24. We’ll be putting in more raised beds throughout Harrisburg. We’ve put in 42 so far … with 58 more to go! Email kim@augustalocallygrown.org if you can help.

FRI, JAN 30 – TEDX AUGUSTA … This year’s theme is “Connections.” What better way to exemplify that theme than to connect local folks to local farmers!? We’ll be providing the morning break food for all participants and we’ll need lots of help to do so! Come ready to give your own one-on-one “Ted Talk” about local foods to everyone you meet.

MON, FEB 2 – WTF* LOCAL FOOD FILM & MEDIA SERIES … Starting in February, we’ll host a monthly media showing of the deeply significant and often alarming issues facing our modern food culture. The series will be “Stone Soup” style … you bring a seasonal ingredient; we’ll throw it in the pot and eat together. First up: an audio lecture on “glyphosate” from a seasoned, activist farmer. Location TBA. *WTF = We Trust (our) Farmers.

SAT, MAR 14 – FARM TOUR & WORKSHOP AT ADDERSON’S FRESH PRODUCE … One of the CSRA’s most beloved organic farms is planning an educational farm tour and workshop in mid-March, and Augusta Locally Grown will be helping! We’ll need several volunteers at this wonderful veggie farm setting in Keysville, GA. Email kim@augustalocallygrown.org to help.

WED, MAR 18-19 – THE GEORGIA DIETETICS CONFERENCE will be held in Augusta this year. Organizer Lauren Belcher has invited ALG to provide an educational booth on local foods. Volunteers will be needed on both days! Email kim@augustalocallygrown.org to help.

SAT, MAR 21 – GROW HARRISBURG URBAN FARM FEAST … this one’s gonna be awesome … more details soon!

SUN, MAR 22 – THREE FARM TOUR AND PROGRESSIVE MEAL … Spring will bring us yet another 3-farm tour … this one at JandL Farm & Stable, Noah’s Farm & Forest, and Spirit Creek Farms. Volunteers will be needed for this one too!!

SAT, APR 25 – BENDERDINKER! Yep, we’ll need a hundred volunteers for this one too!!!!!!!!!!

OTHER NEWS:

SAVANNAH RIVER FARM CONTEST WINNER: “Hand over the filet mignon and no one gets hurt” was the winning photo caption for the $100 prize. Congratulations to wordsmith Judi Ross! Of course, we can’t all write winning captions, but Savannah River Farm’s got their annual new year’s sales going on right now … so everyone wins this time around.

DOWNTOWN PICK UP LOCATION: Sadly, the West End Market & Bakery has announced its closing as of the new year. We wish the Johnson family health and wellness in their transition back to the farm. ALG will continue to use the store front on Broad Street for its weekly pick-up and local food education.

SEE YOU ALL AT THE MARKET ON TUESDAY.
